LASIC, LAZIK or LASIX? On Misspelling LASIK

September 9, 2014

The three Rs of LASIK eye surgery are research, research, research, much of which takes place online. This site offers information on cost, recovery and other laser vision correction topics.  But LASIK.com doesn’t offer much by way of LASIC, LAZIK or LASIX.

Until now.

LASIC is a surname.  LAZIK is too, and LAZIK is also the name of a European fusion music group.

If you search for LASIX, you learn about a brand-name diuretic.

LASIK etymology

The full term LASIK dates back to the 1990s, when scientists began commonly reshaping the human cornea by using a cool-beam laser.

The letters L-A-S-I-K stand for Latin and Greek roots:

(L)aser

(AS)sisted

(I)n Situ – in place, on the position of

(K)eratomileusis  - cornea (kerat) carving (mileusis)
